		<content type="html">&lt;p&gt;Many customers have a misconception that if your home is built on a slab with no basement that there's no radon. Though, the levels do tend to be lower in a slab home, we have worked on many of them!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;They can sometimes be more difficult to mitigate because in a basement we have easy access to an unfinished area of the home as well as electrical. Though in a slab home, mostly everything is finished and makes it harder to find hidden areas to put our system.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What we often times do is find a closet where the system will be tucked away and then tie into an outlet inside the home that is along the exterior wall. This is exactly what we did on a home in Elyria, OH!&lt;/p&gt;

The main one being that they often have many additions, so a regular system where we apply suction underneath a foundation isn't as feasible. Or they have large dirt crawlspaces that are hard to encapsulate and mitigate.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This is where an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) can be useful. With this system, we can feed the home with fresh air and exhaust the stale indoor air. If the radon levels are less than 8 pCi/L, this approach works very well, because it lowers radon levels on average by 70%.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;ERV systems operate by exchanging stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air, while also transferring heat and moisture between the two streams. We can also balance the two air streams where we put more fresh air into the house, pressurizing the area, which helps to dampen the radon from entering. ERVs also prove effective by diluting the concentration of radon in indoor air with the introduction of fresh, uncontaminated air from outside. 		<content type="html">&lt;p&gt;When you think about a basement you probably think about a damp, dark basement. Luckily most basements aren't like that anymore!&amp;nbsp; Through the use of sump pumps and other forms of waterproofing, basements have become much more habitable.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Before we dive in, we'll describe what a high water table is. It refers to when during a heavy rain or sometimes just during normal weather, the amount of water around your foundation is extreme. This can cause moisture seeping through cracks in the basement or causing stains in the foundation walls.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This can affect radon mitigation because when we install our systems, we core drill a 5&quot; hole through the concrete to gain access to the dirt underneath the soil where we dig out some dirt. Then we run our pipe and attach a fan to apply suction. If the water table is too high and moisture begins to fill that hole then it stops our airflow and can cause a loud gurgling sound.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If there is a high water table like this, the best things to do are to make sure that your downspouts are run away from the house and not just terminated at the foundation wall. Also make sure that your gutters are clear so that the water can run freely. Another technique is to build up some soil around your foundation and slope the ground away from your house so that the water runs away. But the most effective, yet often most expensive fix is to install footer drains and a sump pump. The footer drains will gather the excessive amounts of water around your basement and run it into the sump pit, at that point the pump will bring that water outside where the it is often tied into the downspout drain in the yard.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Not only will these techniques help to increase the value and level of comfort in your home but it will also help to increase the efficiency of a mitigation system!&lt;/p&gt;</content>

		<content type="html">&lt;p&gt;This homeowner in Streetsboro, OH called us out to give an estimate on a radon remediation system. His levels were around 6 or 7 and he was looking to make the home safer for him and his family.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When we got there I noticed two different crawlspaces, two or three slabs divided by footers and a lot of cracks. A home like this can be very difficult to mitigate.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But after doing an airflow test under one of the slabs we determined that the footer only goes partway. This is important because wherever there is a footer, our airflow is hampered. And in regards to the other footer, we found a plumbing stack that went underneath it and connected to other pipes in that side of the basement. If we put our suction point next to that pipe we can get airflow underneath the footer by utilizing that pipe run.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Luckily the two crawlspaces were pretty small and didn't need a suction point. The last thing we did was seal the numerous cracks in the basement and around the edges.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;After our mitigation system was installed, his levels went to around 2.5 pCi/L!&lt;/p&gt;</content>
