Job Stories From Painesville, OH
Newer Home With High Radon Levels

This home in Painesville, OH was in an area with high radon levels and luckily their neighbors informed them! We had done work around there in the past so we knew that this home would most likely test high. Another aspect that contributed to the high radon levels was the fact that the house was extremely tight and sealed up. This allows radon and other contaminants to build up in the house.

The location for our mitigation system was going directly into the sump pit. They had an interior footer drain, so we knew that it would be very effective in lowering the levels! We prefer this type of install because it is much simpler for us and the homeowner.

Proper Roof Flashing

Your roof is an essential part of the health of your home. Anytime we penetrate a roof we want to make sure we take the proper steps to reseal the best we can.

We have to go through the roof in a couple different instances. The most common is for interior systems and the other is for exterior systems with soffit penetrations. In both instances the main goal is to increase the aesthetics of the system.

When putting on a roof flashing, we prefer aluminum flashings compared to the cheaper plastic versions. The plastic ones can crack of bend over time with intense heat or cold temperatures. Once the flashing is in place we drive in 7 nails, 3 across the top and 2 more along each side. Once nailed in place we use roofing cement over the exposed nail heads and along the edges of the flashing to weatherproof it.

At that point we are ready to push our pipe up through and finish our install. The last step is to go back onto the roof and put a protective rain collar on the pipe. This way the actual rubber underneath is protected from the sun and the elements.

A Tricky Install!

This homeowner had levels at around 27. He was concerned about his and his families health so he wanted to make sure the levels were dropped to a safer level.

We guarantee all of our systems to bring the levels down below 4pCi/L, which is the EPA action level. We first put in one suction point next to a plumbing stack, that way we could use the underground plumbing runs for better airflow and we also cemented over a fruit cellar floor that was open to the ground. This brought the levels down drastically but not quite enough. This was due to the fact that there was tight clay underneath the foundation making it very hard to pull air through. So in order to overcome that we put in a second suction point on the other side of the basement and installed a higher suction fan. These two changes drastically increased our airflow underneath the slab and levels came down into the acceptable range!
