Exposed Soil Underneath a Jacuzzi

When we think about radon entering a home we often think about open sump pumps, exposed crawlspaces, or cracks throughout the basement. However oftentimes when there is a bathtub or jacuzzi on top of a slab, there are parts of the concrete chipped up to make room for the tub and its plumbing, an example being a home we recently mitigated in Huron, OH. Because these openings are usually sealed up behind a finished wall or best case scenario a removable hatch they are overlooked.

This needs to be sealed, otherwise any radon system installed will suck air through the opening, making the system less efficient and wasting tempered inside air. 

The best way is to use spray foam and insulation. This will create an air tight barrier that will stop radon from emanating up and also give us a solid surface to suck against.
