Fluctuation of Radon Levels Throughout the Year

Radon is a radioactive gas that can be found in the air we breathe. It is created by the decay of uranium in soil, rocks, and water. Radon gas is invisible, odorless, and tasteless, making it difficult to detect without special equipment. Exposure to high levels of radon gas can lead to lung cancer, which is why it is important to monitor radon levels in your home. In this blog post, we will explore how radon levels fluctuate throughout the year.

Radon levels can vary throughout the year due to several factors, including changes in temperature, atmospheric pressure, and ventilation. In general, radon levels are higher during the winter months and lower during the summer months. This is because during the winter, homes are sealed up to keep the heat in, which can cause radon gas to build up. During the summer, windows and doors are often left open, which allows for better ventilation and helps to reduce radon levels. Right now, we are seeing this in a home in Akron, OH where the homeowners have a continuous radon monitor and we can see the fluctuations as the seasons and weather change!

In addition to seasonal changes, radon levels can also be influenced by daily weather patterns. For example, on days with high atmospheric pressure, radon levels tend to be lower. On days with low atmospheric pressure, radon levels tend to be higher. This is because when atmospheric pressure is low, the air is less dense, which makes it easier for radon gas to move through the soil and into homes.
